Update Your Address
As you well know by now, moving time can be hectic and stressful. As you’re packing up all your earthly belongings, it’s almost too easy to forget to check off all the other important tasks on your list — and updating your address is a task that’s frequently forgotten. If you don’t do it, you could accidentally miss a bill that goes unpaid and lands you in collections. You could also experience utility disruptions or problems with your insurance company. Don’t risk it!
Set aside a little time in your week to change your address with all relevant organizations and companies that may need your updated information. We’ve provided a list of places that usually require you to provide new addresses. Changing your address may vary slightly for each of these, so make sure you have time for long phone calls or visits to the physical location when necessary.

Find New Utility Services
Finding and setting up new utility services ahead of time is critical. Otherwise, you’ll show up to your new home without electricity, water, or internet! At least one week before moving, contact your utility service provider and let them know what day you’ll be moving in. That way, they can have your electricity, water, gas, internet, cable, phone lines, sewer, and more up and running by the time you’re ready to settle in.
Some cities use the same utility company for all of their electricity, water, and other essential utilities. Still, you’ll likely have more of a choice when it comes to finding an internet and cable provider. If you’re unsure about which one is best, consider searching online for the highest-rated companies. You could also ask the previous owners of the home, your real estate agent, or the homeowners association (if applicable) for recommendations. Be prepared for a technician to visit your house and handle the setup process. In the interest of your safety, it may also be wise to hire an electrician to do a home inspection to ensure all your wiring is safe and up to code. Make sure all the bills on your old home are also paid before you leave.
Make a List of Vendors
Your vendor list is the list of service providers you trust in case you ever need professional help. This list should include physicians, dentists, landscapers, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and so forth. You can edit and expand this list as you become more familiar with the Summit area.
Register Kids for School
Whether you’re planning to move in the middle of the school year or in the summer before school starts, you should be proactive about registering your children. If you put it off, your kids may not be able to access the schools and classes they prefer. Summit, NJ, has several excellent schools to choose from, so visit the pageto research which one may be best for your family.
Prepare Your Pets
Moves can be challenging for your furry friends. Consider boarding them for a few days or find a friend or family member who can watch them during your move. Pick up any medications they’re on from the vet beforehand so you don’t have to worry about it on moving day. If you decide to keep your pet with you, make sure you know of an emergency vet in case any accidents happen involving your animal during the move. It’s equally important to update your dog or cat’s collar tag with your current address and identify a reputable veterinarian in your neighborhood who can attend to their needs.
Know Move-In Rules for Neighborhood
Homeowners associations often have their own set of move-in rules for new residents. Some may only permit you to move in at certain times of the day or on specific days of the week or require moving trucks to park in a designated place. If your new home falls under the jurisdiction of an HOA, find out what those rules are ahead of time. You can ask your real estate agent, homeowners association, or property management company for this information.
