When it comes to long-distance moves, there are many aspects that require special attention. By working with White Glove Moving & Storage, our team can take care of everything involved with your move.
Preparing for Californian Life
While New York and California are major, bustling U.S. economies and cultural hubs, there are many differences between the states, so you should prepare accordingly.
Weather Overhaul
Depending on where you are settling down in California, the weather will be vastly different from what you’re used to in New York. Gone are the days of the winter deep freezes and the humid, muggy summers. Most areas in California have over 300 days of sunshine a year, and the temperatures typically range between the high 60s and low 70s most of the time with very low humidity.
If you find yourself missing the New York snow but have settled in central or southern California, you can head up north and experience a milder winter in your new state.
Transportation Tradeup
New York is known for its extensive transportation systems, including taxis and the subway system. Because of this, most New Yorkers don’t own a car. However, California doesn’t have these same systems in place, meaning you’ll need to take that into consideration when you make your big move.
If you have a car you plan to continue using interstate, you’ll need to get it registered in California within 20 days of establishing your residency. Additionally, you must get your California license within 10 days of moving here, so don’t delay taking care of those things.
Cheaper Cost of Living
Even though California is an expensive place to live, it is still cheaper than New York. Rent is comparable, but groceries, restaurants, utilities, and general transportation costs are cheaper. Additionally, purchasing a home in California will be roughly $300,000 less than a similar home in New York.
Continued Culture
New York is often referred to as “The Melting Pot” because of its diverse and abundant culture. However, California isn’t far behind in this regard. California shares a border with Mexico and has a long history of Asian immigration, so a beautiful blend of Latin, Spanish, and Asian cultures thrives throughout the state.
Outdoor Options
California has over 800 miles of coastline and hundreds of beautiful beaches for you to enjoy. Is the ocean not really your scene? There are mountains galore ready for you to hike, climb, and explore. Californians tend to be some of the healthiest in the nation because they spend so much enjoying the outdoors and working out without even trying.
Other Considerations
Earthquakes
Most everyone knows that California is extremely prone to earthquakes due to the major fault lines throughout the state. Once you’ve arrived in your new home, make sure to properly secure items throughout your home and have a plan for what to do in the event of an earthquake.
Agriculture
California produces most of the produce we enjoy throughout the U.S. As such, the state is protective of its agriculture and takes measures to ensure that it stays safe. New York, and other New England states, are prone to Gypsy moths on outdoor furniture and other belongings. These moths present a danger to produce, so you must thoroughly inspect all items and remove any trace of the moths before moving your items to California.
White Glove Moving & Storage can help you with all the paperwork and documentation you need in regard to being cleared for Gypsy moths. You can visit www.yourmovegypsymothfree.com to learn more, but don’t worry about filling anything out yet. We’ll have everything ready for you on moving day.
