Benefits of Living in Rhode Island

Maybe you need a change of pace. Perhaps your job is moving, you want your kids to go to smaller schools, or you simply are the type of nomadic person who likes to live in new places every few years. No matter your reason for deciding to move, deciding where to go can sometimes feel overwhelming. Just a few hours from New York, Rhode Island provides a wide range of living experiences that appease nearly any type of lifestyle.

Good Things Come in Small Packages

York City metropolitan area. That isn’t to say good things don’t come in small packages, though.

For one thing, Rhode Island is a dream spot for people who love picturesque New England ocean views. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on two sides, the state’s coast features coves, bays, and inlets that offer both public and private beaches.

If you love tourist attractions, there are plenty in Rhode Island. Spend your weekends visiting such attractions as The Breakers, a 70-room mansion complete with French and Italian marble, a three-story dining room, and paintings on the ceiling. In Newport, you’ll also find a cliff walk that allows you to bask in the sunshine and smell the ocean breeze while you take in the waves crashing against the rocks below.

Of course, if you prefer to live like a local as soon as you move, there is an opportunity to do so. The cities of Rhode Island are full of history that includes popular restaurants, gorgeous boutiques, and gorgeous parks.

The Best Cities in Rhode Island

Despite its small size, Rhode Island is home to several cities offering a range of experiences. The state’s capital, Providence, is the most populous city with just over 180,000 residents. As the capital, it provides a small-town vibe while still offering the benefits of a larger city. Historic architecture, cobblestone streets, and an amazing nightlife and music scene make the city popular. There are several other locations to consider in Rhode Island as well.

  • Barrington —A small town of just 16,000 residents, Barrington is only 7 miles from Providence and offers an even quieter home without being too far from the city. The close-knit community is on the water and is popular among fishers, kayakers, and sailors.
  • Jamestown —Located on Conanicut Island, Jamestown is a small village housing some of the state’s wealthiest residents. Fine dining and upscale boutiques make way to gorgeous waterfront properties that average about $660,000.

Other options include North Kingstown and Portsmouth. Both are suburbs of Providence that offer small populations, easy access to marinas, and a range of green spaces for residents to enjoy. If you have children, you’ll likely want to consider Ashaway during your search. Home to only about 1,500 people, the village provides great parks, a very low crime rate, and an excellent elementary school. Ashaway is also one of the more affordable areas in Rhode Island at just $250,000 for the average home.

Life Is Slower in the Ocean State

The biggest thing you should prepare for if you decide to move to Rhode Island from New York is a bit of a culture shock. In New York City, there is always the hustle and bustle of people on the streets, 24-hour shops, and taxis on every corner. Rhode Island is much slower. The streets are emptier, the people walk at a slower pace, and shops tend to close a lot earlier than in New York City. Many people find the slower pace to be more calming, but don’t worry if you still crave the Big Apple from time to time. New York City is only about 4 hours away from Providence, making it easy to plan a weekend trip here and there.

The Job Market in Rhode Island

In 2020, the job market in Rhode Island was one of the best in the country. Residents in the state have an average salary of about $52,000 per year, which is a bit higher than the national average. The minimum wage begins at $10 an hour compared to the federal rate of $7.25 per hour. The service industry is thriving thanks to the tourism options in the state, so there are plenty of job opportunities in restaurants, hotels, and other tourist-centric businesses. Other industries that are always in need of quality employees in Rhode Island include healthcare, education, and the government. Some of the largest employers in the state include the Navy, Rhode Island Hospital, and Brown University.

Planning Your Move to a New State

Our trained professionals show up in uniforms with clean, well-maintained trucks and all the equipment we need to pack your belongings and move them safely. From your largest sofa to the smallest piece of fine China, we ensure every item is safe and secure before loading it onto the trucks. We unload with just as much care when we reach your new residence. We are bonded and insured to further protect your peace of mind.
