Congratulations on your big decision to move to Ohio!

Anybody who’s from New Jersey knows that it’s a beautiful state with wonderful people. Proximity to NYC, beautiful beach scenery, and a lively local culture are just a few of the selling points that make New Jersey so appealing. Still, even Jersey natives may consider moving west and scoping out homes in the Midwest. One place that is likely to draw attention is Ohio!

Benefits of Living in Ohio

If the Buckeye state beckons, do yourself a favor and familiarize yourself with Ohio’s economy, attractions, and culture. Doing so is likely to sell you on the state, though—there’s a lot to love about Ohio. Football, family, and fun are just some of the reasons transplants love settling down in Ohio. Consider this guide and its information a starting point for your journey, and set your sights on the Buckeye state. Here are a few things you should know before moving from New Jersey to Ohio.

#1

New Jersey and Ohio Job Prospects

Many people relocate to a new state because they have been hired for a new job. If this is the case, congratulations on your new position! If this doesn’t describe your situation, though, you might find yourself on the job hunt after you’ve already settled down in Ohio, which means you’ll want to see how Ohio job prospects size up to those found in New Jersey. If you work in any of the top industries in New Jersey, such as pharmaceuticals and life sciences, financial services, advanced manufacturing, and information technology, you’ll find that the Ohio economy is a little different. The top sector in the Buckeye state, by far, is manufacturing.

This is great news for anybody who works in an industrial sector, but rest assured that other traditional fields such as banking and insurance are also pillars of the Ohio economy. Another interesting distinction between the two states is the contrasting unemployment rate. As of January 2021, New Jersey reported their unemployment rate to be 7.6%, whereas Ohio’s unemployment rate comes in at 5.3% as of January 2021.

Football, Family, and Fun

So what exactly can transplants expect when relocating to the Buckeye state? As was previously mentioned, the state is known for football, family, and fun—with football arguably being number one. To be a Ohioan is to be a Buckeye and Browns fan. Residents routinely tailgate and host parties to watch games for both college and NFL teams.

Football isn’t the only thing that bonds Ohio communities, though—you will also find that Ohio is very family-oriented, with great schools for kids and plenty of opportunities for extracurriculars. Communities in Ohio are also often close-knit, with families and neighbors befriending each other.

One of the reasons why Ohio is considered so family-friendly is because of all of the opportunities for fun! Ohio is home to countless museums, zoos, discovery centers, and theme parks, too. Families travel from around the country to visit Cedar Point, an amusement park in Erie County. Visitors can enjoy great food, rollercoasters, and entertainment at the second-oldest theme park in the U.S.

Ohioans Enjoy Affordable Real Estate

All of these features are reason enough to move to Ohio, but perhaps the greatest selling point of all is the affordability of real estate in the Buckeye State. The average New Jersey home boasts a value of $382,096, according to Zillow, but Ohio homes are valued at only $170,492 on average, by contrast. This makes a move from New Jersey to Ohio look particularly appealing for families seeking to purchase a home and get the most square footage for their money.

Interestingly, the average Ohio home boasts around 1,620 square feet of space, whereas New Jersey homes are 1,740 square feet on average. Still, the extra 120 square feet might not be worth the additional $211,604 New Jersey homebuyers pay on average. The slightly smaller size of an Ohio home comes with a much, much smaller price tag—a sacrifice that most would agree is worthwhile.

#4

Get Used to the Space

One of the last notable distinctions between New Jersey and Ohio is the difference in space between the two states. New Jersey boasts a surface area of 8,729 square miles, and Ohio clocks in at 44,825 square miles—making the latter roughly fives times the size of the former. Needless to say, this abundance of space makes for a different living experience. The extra room is a major draw for many transplants—especially those seeking more privacy and room to breathe.

In addition to boasting more space, Ohio also has more residents than New Jersey. 8.882 million people call the Garden State Home, whereas 11.69 million people call the Buckeye State home. Still, Ohio’s population density is a fraction of New Jersey’s, so there is more space to be had in Ohio. This means bigger lots for homes, less traffic on highways, and overall better air quality—what’s not to love?

The extra space, the family appeal, the football, and the economy are just a few of the major features attracting transplants to Ohio. If you’re considering joining the Buckeye state and leaving New Jersey behind, there’s a good chance the differences will be a welcome change. Ohio is a beautiful state with a reputation for friendly, welcoming people.
