Iowa Is Connected

Iowa’s number-one position for infrastructure in the U.S. News rankings is due largely because of its efforts to bring internet access to all its citizens. Many rural areas across the country are underserved when it comes to the ability to connect to the internet that many urban dwellers take for granted.

Being so far removed from more densely populated areas, it is even more crucial for people in rural areas to be able to connect to the internet. Iowa has made reaching those people a priority. Contemporary agriculture currently has big data needs, and if those increase in the future, access is going to be even more important.

Iowa is Less Rural Than You Think

It is true that a majority of Iowa’s 36,016,500 acres is devoted to farmland. It is true that its population density of 54.5 people per square mile is approximately one-eighth of what it is in New York state. And it is also true that agriculture is one of the most important industries.

However, if you’re thinking that everyone in Iowa lives on a farm or out in the country, that is false. As a matter of fact, only 35.7% of Iowans live in rural areas. The remaining 64.3% live in cities. The largest city in Iowa is the state capital of Des Moines.

Other large cities include Cedar Rapids and Davenport to the east and Sioux City to the northwest. Council Bluffs on the Nebraska border is the ninth-largest city in Iowa with a population of 62,597. Nevertheless, it offers lots of big-city amenities as part of the Omaha metropolitan area.

Iowa has Jobs in Lots of Different Industries

While agriculture is hugely important to Iowa’s economy and culture, it is not the biggest industry in the state. The manufacturing sector is actually bigger, employing over 16% of Iowa’s workforce and contributing billions of dollars to the state’s gross domestic product.

Food processing is the biggest component of the manufacturing industry in Iowa. Well-known brands such as General Mills, Quaker Oats, Heinz, Wells, and Blue Bunny all have processing facilities there. Other significant manufactured products in Iowa include heavy equipment, with Deere and Company having plants in five of the largest cities, and agricultural chemicals.

Iowa also leads the United States in renewable energy production. Combining aspects of the agricultural and manufacturing industries, the generation of wind-turbine electricity has increased exponentially statewide over the past 30 years or so.

Iowa's Agriculture Is Hugely Significant

Even though agriculture is not the biggest industry in the state, Iowa agriculture is still extremely important to the rest of the country. Iowa ranks in the top three states in the nation for soybean, red meat, pork, egg, and corn production, and one-fourteenth of the nation’s food supply is produced here.

Iowa Politics Are Complex

Because New York tends to be mostly liberal, you may feel nervous about a move to the Midwest, where conservative politics are generally more prevalent. However, Iowa is a swing state, and in the last 12 presidential elections, it has voted for Democratic candidates as often as Republican ones.

Every four years, all eyes turn to Iowa as it has the first contest in the presidential election cycle. Unlike other states, which hold primaries, Iowa has caucuses. Once you’re registered to vote in Iowa, you can participate in a caucus regardless of your party affiliation. A caucus is more like a neighborhood meeting than the polling procedures you are used to in New York.

Political opinions in Iowa run the entire spectrum, so you are sure to find people who agree with you, as well as worthy opponents for a good-natured debate of the issues.

In Iowa the State Fair Is a Big Deal

If you’ve never been to a state fair before, you don’t want to miss the show that Iowa puts on every year. It takes place in Des Moines for a week and a half in August as a celebration of the state’s achievements in both industry and agriculture.

Not only is the State Fair the largest annual event in Iowa, but it is also one of the largest state fairs in the entire country, drawing over a million people from around the world every year.

Even if you’re not interested in the agricultural competitions, there is plenty for you to enjoy at the Iowa State Fair. There are carnival rides and monster truck shows, and your admission to the fair gives you access to free concerts and shows by an eclectic range of artists. Yes, there are plenty of country music acts, but you’ll also have the opportunity to hear hip-hop, rock, pop, Latino music, and other various styles.
