Update Your Address

Amid all the hubbub of packing and unpacking, little tasks can slip through the cracks. Updating your address is one of those tasks that can be easily forgotten. This is an important step of the moving process that, if skipped, can lead to bills or other important mail going missing. You also run the risk of having problems with your utility services, insurance, or bank.

Take a few hours to update your address with the following companies or organizations. Each process is different, so you might have to make a call or pay a visit to the local branch. Or, you might be able to fill out an online address change. Use this list as a guide.

You should also update your address with your local:

  • Banks
  • Loan providers
  • Utility service providers
  • Subscription services
  • Insurance
  • Office payroll department
  • Social Security Administration
  • IRS

Find New Utility Services

Movers should take care of finding and setting up their new utility services a week or so before the move. You don’t want to show up and not have water, electricity, or Wi-Fi in your new home. It may take the utility companies a couple days to set up your services, so call ahead of time. You will need to tell them what day you want the services to start.

Home utilities include water, gas, electric, sewer, internet, cable TV, security systems, and phone lines. Some utilities, like water and sewer, go through only one company for everyone in the city. But for utilities like cable TV and internet, you have a few more options to choose from. To help you make the right choice, ask your realtor, the previous homeowner, or the homeowner’s association which utility companies they recommend.

A technician might stop by your new home to take care of any set-up needs. You might also want an electrician to do a walkthrough and energy audit of your home to find leaking energy or any electrical hazards. They will make you aware of any wiring that is faulty or not up to code so you can make educated decisions about any updates you want to make.

Before the move, pay any overdue utility bills and have a technician do a final reading of your gas, water, and electric meters.
