Find New Utility Services

Setting up your new utility services is a must before move-in day. You’ll want to give the utility companies ample time to set up your accounts and get the services ready to go, so call them well in advance. Let them know the date you want to start the services and, if it’s the same utility company that you currently go through, the day you want to stop services at your current residence.

The utilities to set up likely include water, electricity, gas, sewer, internet, cable TV, and security systems. For some utilities, such as internet, you will have a handful of companies to choose from, while others only have one service provider option. When choosing between companies, it’s a good idea to ask your real estate agent, homeowner’s association, previous homeowner, landlord, or property management company which providers they recommend.

A technician from the utility companies might stop by your home to complete any set-up needs. If possible, have an electrical technician visit your new home to perform an energy audit. They can check some of the electrical work to ensure everything it up to code and safe, which limits the risk of electrocution, electrical shortages, and house fires. The electrician will also be able to tell you where you are leaking energy and what updates you can make to improve energy efficiency.

Don’t forget to stay up to date on your payments for your existing utility services. Check your accounts and pay any overdue utility bills, and plan for a technician to do a final meter reading. Keep a copy of your meter reports for your records.
