Benefits of Living in Nebraska

New York is a beautiful state with lots of opportunities to enjoy the city, experience cultural events, and find jobs. If you're getting tired of crowds or the East Coast work culture, though, moving to Nebraska is a great way to change directions. As you start looking for a job and house, get excited about these aspects of your move and new state.

Find a New Career in Nebraska

Nebraska has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the United States, so you’re sure to find a job that works for your skillset. Agriculture is the biggest industry, but if farming isn’t for you, there are lots of jobs in healthcare, computer science, and hospitality. Learn a new skill or try on a different hat with one of Nebraska’s many open positions.

Dig for Dinosaurs

Many people think of Nebraska as full of prairies and not much else, and while it’s true that the state has lots of farmland, it also has plenty of cultural attractions. If you’re interested in history or archeology, stop by Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park. This park is home to an ongoing archaeological dig, and it has a special center for kids.

Swing by the Henry Doorly Zoo

If you’re more interested in animals that are still alive, make Henry Doorly Zoo one of your first stops when you move into town. This Omaha zoo dates back to 1894 and is dedicated to conserving and protecting animals as well as letting people see them. Make sure to check out its collection of large cats and nocturnal animals, which are the biggest in North America.

Relive the Covered Wagon Days

Step back into the past by visiting Gering for Oregon Trail Days, a weekend festival celebrating Nebraska’s heritage. Participate in competitions, enjoy fresh-baked food, and discover what it means to be a Cornhusker at your first festival.

Nebraska has Some Bizarre Laws

Every state has a few laws that outsiders don’t quite understand, and Nebraska is no exception. If you’re a mom, you can’t perm your daughter’s hair unless you receive a license from the state government. Also, if you’re a guy, you can’t display a shaved chest in Omaha. You have been warned.

Nebraska offers a Quality Education

Schools in New York are high-quality but famously expensive. When you move to Nebraska, you’re not sacrificing your or your kids’ education, but you’re still saving money. Take advantage of one of more than 20 colleges to get another degree or to take classes you’re interested in without going deep into debt.

Cheer on the Big Red!

Nebraska’s biggest football team is the Cornhuskers, and this team operates out of the University of Nebraska. It’s wildly popular, so don’t count on seeing any of your neighbors on a game day, unless you’re hosting a watch party. If you want to get in on the action firsthand, make sure to buy your tickets in advance; every home game sells out.

What's for Dinner?

While you might miss New York’s pizzas, Nebraska has plenty of special foods to make your mouth water. Start by trying a Runza, which is one of Nebraska’s most famous foods. These sandwiches are made of cabbage, onion, and beef in their traditional form, and they’re made as pockets so you can carry them around during a football game or party.

Before your first barbecue, make sure to try Dorothy Lynch dressing, which is a Nebraska staple. It’s thick and both sweet and spicy, and you can put it on anything savory.

Did you know that Kool-Aid was invented in Nebraska? Look out for a big jar of Mr. Kool’s favorite sweet drink at every potluck or party. There are tons of flavors, so don’t be afraid to get creative when you’re picking your drinks for the week at the grocery store.

Thanks to Nebraska’s booming agricultural business, all kinds of beef products are fresh and juicy. Try steak, ribs, hamburgers, and any other beef-based dishes you can get your hands on.

Learn a New Way to Say "Hi"

When you drive into Nebraska, you’ll probably pass drivers who lift their pointer fingers as if they’re pointing at their ceilings. They may also nod when they point. Don’t panic or get annoyed when this happens; this one-finger wave is how many Nebraskans say hello and welcome you to their state.

Hug a Tree

Nebraska was the host for the first-ever American Arbor Day, which took place in 1872, and Nebraskans still tend to respect their trees. Make sure to visit the Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventure in Nebraska City, which is open during the whole year. Don’t forget to get together with your neighbors or city to plant some trees, too.

Slide Down Chimney Rock

Chimney Rock may not have a real place for Santa to slide down, but it’s still one of the most famous Midwestern landmarks. Used to guide California, Oregon, and Mormon Trail travelers, this 300-foot rock is a must-see for new Nebraskans.

Moving to Nebraska means swapping out your fast-paced New York lifestyle for a slower, more outdoorsy experience. As you pack up your belongings and plan your first excursion as a Cornhusker, reach out to White Glove Moving and Storage for help with your long-distance move.
