Learn All About the Benefits of Living in Nebraska
If you’re feeling cramped living in New Jersey and are looking for a new place where you have some room to stretch out and have some space to yourself, Nebraska is located right in the Midwest and offers large open spaces. As you prepare for the long-distance move, here is what you should know about the Cornhusker State.
#1 There’s Plenty of Farmland to Go Around
While you may have had to rent a space in New Jersey or live in a small apartment, a vast majority of Nebraska is taken up by farmland. If you’ve always dreamed of having acres of land to yourself, Nebraska is the perfect place to do it.
Apart from having more space, you’d also have the opportunity to make a business from starting your own farm or ranch. Agriculture is the biggest industry in Nebraska. Also, there are many types of crops that are successful in the state. As Nebraska’s nickname the “Cornhusker” state implies, corn is a major crop — even if most of it used to feed cattle instead of people. This makes sense when you consider there are more cows than people in the state.
#2 It’s Mostly Flat – But Not Completely
Unlike New Jersey that offers a variety of terrains, including mountains, coastline, marshes, and forests, Nebraska is made up of primarily plains. The state can be split into two main regions, with the Great Plain to the west and the Dissected Till Plain to the East. While the Great Plains may sound like they don’t have much to offer, you can visit picturesque canyons and valleys in the area along with the extensive sand dunes and the Badlands.
While Nebraska is by no means a mountain state, there are still beautiful peaks and rock formations throughout the state. There are several beautiful lakes, including the lush beaches of Lake McConaughy and the Lake Wanahoo reservoir, a popular spot for boating and fishing.

#3 A Better Bang for Your Buck
While there may be many things to love about New Jersey, affordable living is likely not one of them. Nebraska, on the other hand, is one of the more affordable states in the United States. Overall, the cost of living index is 89.1, placing it below the national average.
Housing is also affordable, with a median house value of $155,800. This is more than half the value of homes in New Jersey. If you plan to rent when you first move to Nebraska, you can expect a reasonable lease with the median gross rent sitting at only $833 a month.
#4 Amazing Schools at Every Grade Level
Nebraska is competitive when compared to other schools in the nation, which is important to know as a parent of school-aged children or as a current college student. In 2019, Nebraska ranked sixth overall for its public education system as part of the US News and World Report’s “Best States” ranking. The high school graduation rate for adults over 25 is at 91.4%, and 31.9% of adults in the same age group have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
There are also more than 50 colleges across Nebraska, most of which are located in Lincoln or Nebraska. When rating schools based on the median alumni salary, the University of Nebraska Omaha is ranked at the top of the list.
#5 Enjoy Unique Wildlife in Your Backyard
With a new area comes new wildlife to explore. At the Fort Niobrara Wildlife Refuge, you may be able to see what’s left of Bison in the area, where approximately 350 spend their days grazing. You can also witness the largest gathering of sandhill cranes in the world in the spring.
Bighorn sheep can be seen in the Badlands climbing rock structures in herds. Elk, pronghorn, bald eagles, wild turkey, snapping turtles, and western tiger salamanders are just a few of the other creatures you may have the fortune to see while living in Nebraska.

#6 Interesting Attractions to Pass the Time
Nebraska is full of several unique places to visit and events to attend. While we went already went over some of the amazing natural attractions in the area, you can visit the Ashfall Fossil Beds to see the fossils of animals killed in a volcanic eruption, including now-extinct animals. Carhenge is also a popular attraction and display of recycling at its best. It is a replica of Stonehenge made completely out of rescued abandoned cars.
If you’d rather see what downtown has to offer, you’ll want to designate some time to see the Old Market, which looks like it hasn’t changed since the 1800s. Haymarket district is a fun spot to explore if looking for quirky shops or more historical buildings. You also can’t live in Nebraska without visiting the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and the Strategic Air and Space Museum at least once.
On days where the weather is at its best, walking the cowboy trail is a great way to get some sunshine in while looking over the Great Plains and visiting some of the smaller towns of Nebraska. This trail is 195-miles over an old railway line. If you don’t want to walk the whole way, you can always take a bike or horse along.
Nebraska is all-around a great place to live, with affordable living, great schools, and plenty of fun, beautiful places to explore. Let the White Glove Company take care of the details of your move so you can start planning what you want to do when you get there. Get a free quote today to learn what you can expect.
